Frequently Asked Questions

The Money

Pricing

Fully transparent pricing. For any gelato output , we will post and retain on our Transparency page all incurred recurrent hard costs (excludes equipment, etc.) for each project. Should you want receipts or proof relevant to your specific project, just ask . We calculate the cost, per-scoop, per-pint, per-quart, per-gallon, and make that cost clear and upfront at each transaction. The cost we charge you will include a 10% net profit margin, and that profit will be entirely donated to charity . Should you want to pay more than the total operating costs + 10% net profit margin, please feel free to do so. It will still go exclusively to charity. See our current operating costs for the full breakdown.

The Company

Origins

Many gelato operations ground themselves in an Italian, or European, heritage, and rightfully so. We are not Italian. We did not learn how to make gelato in Europe. We did not learn in a class. We learned how to make it in Vermont, using online literature, with two years of over-investment, mistakes, obsession, perfectionism, and passion. A special thanks to Paul at Underbelly for his guidance. And a special thanks to another Paul, Paul at Newman's Own , for his inspiration.

The Story, Honestly

The story is our one exception: inspired by real life, filled in with imagination. Everything else on this site is exactly true.

Support, Not Investment

We refuse outside investment that expects any return. Support? We will enthusiastically consider that. And that doesn't need to be fiscal. Lend us your craft, your time, your belief. Reach out with legitimately any thoughts. To-date, we have built this with no outside support whatsoever. We welcome the assistance of those who believe in our mission and approach.

Strengths And Weaknesses

Our strength. The benefit of our operational scale is that we can afford to invest in attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and quality: ethical sourcing, organic, non-GMO, rare vanilla beans, flavorful coffee beans, quality chocolate, customer-requested flavors, etc. That is our strength versus massive CPG operations, who cannot sustain a for-profit business while placing quality and principle above all else. Our weakness. Production abilities. We have no homogenizer. We have no batch freezer. No factory. We are not a supply chain operation. We have no employees. We have no true infrastructure. We are a home kitchen, a portable digital freezer, effort, and dedication. That's legitimately it.

What We Are Now

Right now, while we wait for every single piece of certification / legal framework / etc. to land, we're just a project. That probably breaks some rules. C'est la vie. Sue us! (Don't plz.)

Why We Exist

I'm insanely lucky, in many different ways. If you want to know more, ask me personally. I'm an open book. Kenny's insanely lucky, in many different ways. She's got a dad who dotes on her wholeheartedly and is taken to the woods every day to chase squirrels (that she never catches). He's Robin, she's Batman; he's Luigi, she's Mario. He'll call her codependent, but the truth is he's the codependent one. She's got a mom that is the only person she'll ever cuddle with. She's got a loving extended family who care for her as if she was their own. And she'll forever want to play, and forever have a play partner. We're here to bring fortune to the unlucky animals. Dogs first, more to come.

Our Future

We're going to grow. More gelato, more good. Our pricing won't change: cost, plus ten percent, always. As we grow, we'll split that ten. Five percent to the rescue we support at the time. Five percent saved toward Butters' Buddies: a rescue and farm of our own, where the dogs nobody wanted run the hills and never need saving again. We take no salary. Every cent is for animals. None of it is ours to keep. We won't sell a piece to someone chasing a return. We'll look for people who believe. Support, not investment. The jar is still filling. One scoop at a time.

Marketing

We believe in attraction rather than promotion. Promotion is paid, attraction is earned. Through the quality of our product, our craft, our mission, and our approach, we believe that we have no need for paid demand generation. Our output should speak for itself. Money is better spent on those who need it: animals. Those who exist to maximize profit need not apply. We have no social channels. We run no media. We have no PR. We make gelato, and raise donations. That's it. We're us, not a tactic.

The Paperwork

The Boring Legal Entity Paperwork

We are a registered Vermont L3C (low-profit limited liability company), a for-profit entity built around a social mission. We are not a nonprofit, and purchases are not tax-deductible donations. Our Application for Authority to operate in New York State is currently pending. New York does not allow for L3C status directly (lame), so we register our Vermont L3C to do business there instead.

The Painful Legal Certification Process

Milk Dealer License, Commissary Agreement, Dedicated Storage Verification, NYS State Inspection Clearance, FDA Food Facility Registration, HACCP / Preventive Controls Plan, NYS Certificate of Authority (Sales Tax Registration), Certified Food Protection Manager Status, Commercial General Liability Insurance, Product Liability Insurance, Approved Product Labels, Form ST-120, PCQI Certification, Article 20-C Food Processing Establishment License, Wholesale Frozen Dessert Manufacturer License, Application for Authority. This will take time.
